LiDAR 360 ScanningStahl Sheaffer has distinctive experience and staff trained in roadway condition assessment, roadway and pavement design, and roadway construction management for betterment, maintenance, and restoration projects. Stahl Sheaffer recently developed a system that utilizes mobile LiDAR survey scanning in conjunction with 360 panoramic photography and HD (1080p) videos to document roadway conditions observed during assessments. Categorization of each roadway deficiency by location, type, severity, and size allows Stahl Sheaffer to tabulate a Pavement Condition Index (PCI) based on assessments conducted in accordance with PennDOT Publications. We have found that the benefits of utilizing mobile LiDAR in the pavement data collection process are: (1) it allows the field work to be performed at or near highway speeds to improve operator safety; (2) it minimizes the impact on traffic; (3) it provides accurate location data on a consistent global reference; and (4) it allows the data to be checked for quality control in the office environment. Stahl Sheaffer is able to perform feature extraction on LiDAR and survey data to create AutoCAD and Microstation base mapping and planimetric files, allowing engineers to make well-informed design decisions to tailor modification and construction plans to fit the situation at hand. Stahl Sheaffer can also create “intelligent” 3D models of the survey data. Project data can be imported directly into AutoDesk, Bently, and ESRI software packages as an industry standard .LAS format for clients and used directly as if clients were on site to pull measurements, locations, and clearance information, saving time and money. |
Stahl Sheaffer has digitized and indexed approximately 170,000 miles of roads across multiple states, primarily in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia.
