West Pine Avenue Apartments Structural Design

This student housing project near Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania included the design and construction of a four-story apartment-style student housing complex. Stahl Sheaffer was responsible for the building's structural layout and corresponding design. The client requested a primarily wood framed structure; therefore, Stahl Sheaffer designed stories two through four with structural lumber. Increased loads and longer open spans in the garage level required more substantial materials, and Stahl Sheaffer provided both reinforced concrete and concrete masonry unit (CMU) options for bidding purposes. For durability and long-term value, the concrete option was chosen and constructed. Stahl Sheaffer’s ability to design with several materials and provide effective connections between these interfaces resulted in significant construction cost savings.
