Sunset Road Improvements

PennDOT District 9-0, SR 4013 Section 001, WO#1, Cambria County, PA

Sunset Road (SR 4013) is three-mile roadway corridor that provides a connection from Main Street (SR 219) in the Borough of Carrolltown, continuing through East Carroll Township, to SR 36 in Elder Township, Cambria County. The Sunset Road corridor has been recognized as a difficult roadway to navigate due to its many sharp and sudden curves along the roadway and limited sight distances when entering from the side streets and on to SR 36. 

Stahl Sheaffer, as a subconsultant to Stantec, was retained to complete a traffic analysis of the Sunset Road corridor to evaluate the existing operation of the corridor and four existing intersection locations, as well as to evaluate future corridor improvement alternatives at select study intersections. The results of this study will be used to guide intersection and roadway improvements associated with potential improvements projects to the corridor.

Specific tasks included data collection and analysis, traffic forecast utilizing AirSage cellphone data, synchro analysis of the alternatives, and preparation and review of the final traffic study component of the project. The alternatives included roundabout intersection designs for both ends of the corridor along with realignments at several intersections to change the major and minor movements.
