McCoy Natatorium Structural Upgrades
The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA
Stahl Sheaffer Engineering was selected by The Pennsylvania State University to design a new fall prevention and railing system for the outdoor diving tower at McCoy Natatorium located on the University Park campus. The university wanted to encase the tower railing areas by CPSC guidelines for pedestrian use of elevated areas and update the look of the railing. Stahl Sheaffer planned and created a system to be attached to the existing protective railing that would prevent divers from slipping through the gaps of the stair risers or passing through the openings of the railing. The railing throughout the tower was also updated to OSHA standards for height and capacity and weatherized to prevent corrosion.
For the indoor pool facilities, Stahl Sheaffer provided a revised support frame drawing based on updated equipment size, and a construction plan for moving equipment across the roof, including a rigging plan for using the penthouse roof framing to hoist equipment through the louver opening and a layout of the underground utilities, indicating locations where a crane could safely be placed in the parking area. Stahl Sheaffer’s services also included the design of a support structure for a new scoreboard, and safety netting on the loft so that the dive team could use it for dry-land training, including trampolines and springboards. |
