Stahl Sheaffer provided site and structural engineering design services for the $8M enhancements to the Penn State Field Hockey Complex including replacement of viewing stands and seating, and new pressbox, locker rooms, restrooms, storage, and concessions. With Stahl Sheaffer’s assistance, a complex design structure has been engineered in collaboration with the architect to fit within the budgeted value for the construction. The steel superstructure relies on a combination of leaning columns and truss-type framing to minimize interferences with pedestrian circulation and underground utilities at the field level. Cantilevers extend the pressbox over the grandstands and allow uninhibited sitelines within the facility. Due to poor soil conditions, a mat slab foundation was designed to create stability across the site and structure. Stahl Sheaffer also provided site civil engineering design, municipal coordination, and permitting. The project included site layout and grading, design of stormwater collection and conveyance facilities, relocation of utility services, erosion control plans, and construction administration.
As part of a previous project, Stahl Sheaffer also managed structural design for the installation of new perimeter fencing and enhanced facility entries to the existing field hockey facility.
