Revitalizing a Landmark: Structural Innovation at the Historic Nittany Lion Inn

Stahl Sheaffer Engineering played a pivotal role in the transformative renovation of the iconic Nittany Lion Inn, located at the heart of Penn State University’s campus. Teamed with OGP Architects and LS Fiore Construction on behalf of Scholar Hotel Group (SHG), Stahl Sheaffer delivered innovative structural engineering solutions that honored the building’s historic character while supporting modern upgrades. This complex project demanded a meticulous balance between preservation and modernization. Our team provided expert structural design for critical elements, including new support framing for the Inn’s signature architectural entry canopy, reinforced timber trusses in the bar area, steel lintels for updated wall openings, and attic framing to support new mechanical systems on the roof. We also re-supported the low roof structure over the covered interior patio, addressing structural challenges with precision and care.

One of the most demanding aspects of this renovation was the need to navigate undocumented and inaccurate modifications from past construction efforts. Stahl Sheaffer conducted comprehensive field investigations to uncover and resolve existing deficiencies, most notably in the iconic entrance canopy, where our team discovered and remediated structural issues, including an unestablished load path and insufficient connections. The redesign preserved the architectural integrity of the entry while ensuring its long-term stability.

Inside the Inn, we encountered a patchwork of historic materials, including CMU, brick, and clay tile supporting steel beam, joist, and concrete on metal deck, which was compromised by previous renovations that introduced various mechanical penetrations. Stahl Sheaffer responded by reimagining the structural support system, using creative load path alternatives that included hanging members from existing and new steel bearing on masonry, and integrating new steel columns. We also supported the contractor with on-site engineering for temporary shoring and construction staging.

In the bar area, where aging timber framing showed signs of structural stress and deterioration, we designed custom bolted steel plate wraps to reinforce the existing wood elements. These were carefully crafted in collaboration with the architect to blend seamlessly with the original aesthetic while delivering modern structural performance.

Through deep expertise, innovative problem-solving, and close coordination with the design and construction teams, Stahl Sheaffer helped breathe new life into a beloved historic landmark—ensuring it stands strong for generations to come.
