  • Structural Design

Stahl Sheaffer was selected to provide the structural design of a new four-story, 69,000-SF building and two connector bridge structures at Endicott College in Beverly, MA as part of an architect-led team. The facility provides for the consolidation of Sports Science and Nursing program with new instructional spaces, laboratory and simulation rooms, offices, and assembly/multipurpose rooms. It serves as a focal point on campus, with a core tower that provides a fourth-floor view across campus directly to the Atlantic Ocean. The four-story building was designed as a concrete floor slab over steel framing with a moment frame lateral force resisting system. The building features a curved façade facing the Atlantic Ocean with a rooftop terrace. The curved building face was coordinated with the architect to use straight steel beams with a curved concrete slab edge to accommodate the curved glazing while minimizing increases in steel fabrication costs versus utilizing curved steel. In addition to the building design, two steel bridges were designed to connect the new building to other existing buildings on campus; one bridge was designed with curved tube steel framing to curve to the existing building and the other was framed as a sloped truss framed to perpendicularly align with another existing building. The structure and grid were coordinated to meet the large open bays needed for lab spaces and architectural layouts.
